Ever played the game of Whist? Me neither, but tempers could occasionally flare, and 14 of these brass gaming counters bear the words KEEP YOUR TEMPER on the reverse with either a man facing left or a woman facing right at either end of a table. Three of the counters bear the words TO HANOVER with a figure of a rider on a horse. This is Queen Victoria's very unpopular uncle, Ernest Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, who was obliged to fulfill the Salic Law male-only role of the King of Hanover, which Victoria could not do because she was a woman. So off goes the Duke TO HANOVER! The reverse design mimics the poses of St George and the Dragon used on other British coins, but sometimes the designer would fashion the Duke into a monkey riding the horse. You can examine these closely and decide which style is represented on these. These two types of gaming counters were among the most popular designs for many years.
