A battalion of Mormons were mustered into service in July 1846 and traveled from Iowa to San Diego, California, a total of 2100 miles. These men did not have proper uniforms but their commanding officers wore army regulation uniforms with this small shield on their caps. This shield has a bail with two drop pins at 1.5 in. in length. This battalion was responsible for establishing trials through the Sierras from present day Placerville, California to Carson City, Nevada and were also detailed to bury the victims of the Donner Party winter camp. A piece of forgotten Mormon history.
