This is a journey told through a few hundred glass negatives during the late 19th to early 20th century. Places visited in this journey include Port Essington and Hazelton, British Columbia. There are several plates show a journey on the Skeena River, native villages, fish cannery and several ports of call along the way. They've been divided into sections like town views, river views, inside canneries and even what appears to be a royal visit. This region was heavily active with miners during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896, as this was a thoroughfare for those on the way to the goldfields of Alaska. From these photo plates, you'll see that, while the promise of gold wealth was the draw for emigrants, fishing and fish processing was the livelihood of the people who came there before 1896. These plates are in surprisingly great condition for their age, with few washouts. They are fragile, so keep in mind the risk of them being shipped. Picking them up here at the office would be best. These are fascinating and a great archive of history during that era. Please see photos for more details. British Columbia Canada
