Brown stoneware bottle recovered from the S.S. Central America. It is 7 inches tall, and just shy of 3 inches in diameter. Just above the base, the side is embossed // VITREOUS STONE BOTTLES / WARRENTED NOT TO ABSORB / J. BOURNE & SON / PATENTEES / DENBY & CODNOR PARK POTTERY / NEAR DERBY. //. This pottery works has existed since 1812, and it was under the leadership of J. Bourne, his sons, their descendants, and other relatives until 1942 when it passed to the Wood and Dales families, who had been in the management of the company for many years. After various mergers and acquisitions over the years, Denby Pottery Ltd still exists today. See http://www.potteryhistories. com/Denbyhistory.html for more information about J. Bourne and Denby Potteries.
