Brown's Marysville Directory For the year commencing March, 1861: Embracing a general and business register of citizens with statistical tables, historical references, etc. in fine A Gazetteer of the City; Prefaced by Historical sketches of industrial enterprises, benevolent and charitable associations, etc. W. C. Brown, Collator and Publisher. Marysville. Printed at the office of the Daily California Express. 115 pages, plus Contents list at end, 2 pale green advertisement pages and a double-sided 2 page political ad slogan(?) with a large hand with index finger extended upward on one side, and the letters, "M.Y.O.B." in giant bold print on the opposite side. Considering the year, it seems most likely that this is in reference to a political slogan for Presidential candidate Stephen Douglas, who distributed tokens and other trinkets with this acronym, his campaign message to slavery opponents was: "Intervention Is Disunion: Mind Your Own Business." It is highly unusual for a political ad to appear in a directory, and since no other information is printed anywhere on the page, the vagueness alone makes us suspect this odd page leaf tucked away in the back might reflect the political views of the publisher. If we are correct, this is a golden example of how divided we were as a country, and the strong opinions felt by supporters of both sides, all across the country. This little directory is in good condition, considering it's age. Binding is still mostly intact and boards, spine and inside pages all attached. There is a split between front ads and title page, binding glue is failing and signatures are beginning to split at the top and feel a little loose, but so far nothing is detached. Covers and spine are worn along edges and corners, some tears to cover paper and slight bowing or warping of boards, resulting from age and use, not moisture. Inside pages are complete, clean and show very slight discoloration. Some minor stains/spots on a few random pages - nothing that obscures text. Page 109 is torn in the center with a chip missing and a substantial tear in the middle of the page, but all text is legible. The last end page on light green paper has a large chip on the edge of the bottom of the page, but not past the margin. Ads appear throughout, consistent with other directories from this time. It appears this directory is not available in digital format online without a subscription, and may not be available at all. Inside the front cover we found an 1870 handwritten receipt for $532.60 paid by Mr. Jacob Ebert, signed by J. C. Martin. Printed by H. Well, Stationer. This collectible is included as a bonus. RARE EARLY DIRECTORY. Examine photos carefully for condition details.
