Two different certificates from this company. 1)Buckeye Mining and Tunneling Co. of Colorado incorporated on February 5, 1876. Colorful stock. No. 7152 issued to C. F. Woods by C. E. White, Secretary, and A. M. Cassidy, President, on 8 July 1880 for 100 shares. Countersigned by the N. Y. Mining Stock Exchange Registry on 10 July by the registrar and the assistant registrar. A smaller-sized stock. U/C. Signed on reverse by Woods and a witness on 13 July 1880. The company owned “the Silver Cliff Mine with assays of $20-75/ton. Large masses of cerargyrite (silver chloride = 75%) [or horn silver] of this ore were mined near the surface which yielded 30-50 oz/ton.” Silver Cliff, which was founded in 1878, had a “population of 5,000 with 29 grocery stores, two banks, three fine hotels, three dance halls and 25 saloons” by 1880. Alex M. Cassidy purchased “oil claims at Oil Springs, Fremont County,” in 1862, and “sunk six wells that were moderately profitable.” He then turned to mining [Ref: Western Americana Auction # 9, Volume 2: Colorado, p. 34, 2001]. Tiny piece missing from top right corner. 2)Buckeye Mining and Tunneling Co. of Colorado Cert. #1561, issued in 1879 to John F. Scott and signed by the same company officers. Colorado state seal. Burn hole thru center. Issued for 100 shares. Uncancelled.City: Silver CliffCounty: CusterState: CODate:
