As noted in his preface, Bushnell's goal here is to envision for the reader a time before European settlement in the Eastern United States. His extensive research throughout his life led to the bequeathment of his collection of photographs of his field work to the Peabody Museum at Harvard University [peabody.harvard.edu]. This book contains several photographs and illustrations of tribal life east of the Mississippi. The frontispiece is a color reproduction of the "Section of La Harpe Manuscript Map," circa 1720. Hardbound in green cloth. Slight separation at spine. 111 pp. 6" x 9". 2) Native Cemeteries and Forms of Burial East of the Mississippi. Bushnell, David I. Bulletin No. 71. Bushnell focuses on the burial rites of tribes (some now extinct.) There are a number of photographs at the back of the book of excavations of burial sites from throughout the Eastern United States.
