This is a .54 caliber Burnside Carbine 5th model S/N 33027. This rifle is marked " Burnside Rifle Co. Providence, R.I." barley visible on the right side of the lock-plate and marked "Burnside Patent March 15th, 1856" on the top of the receiver (most 4th and 5th models have the 1863 date). This carbine has a 20 in. barrel and folding leaf rear sight with no other markings on the barrel. It is missing the saddle ring slide attachment, the sling swivel on the bottom of the buttstock, and hammer. (The hammer and screw are available through Lodgewood.com). There is an "H" visible as an Inspector's mark on the left side of the loading lever and the top flat of the butt-plate. The rifle has medium heavy patination and the bore is pitted. #33027 has seen much action with the loading lever showing impacts from another metal object indicating difficulty in getting the action closed. The Burnside is a transition type firearm where the first use of a cone shaped brass cartridge was used but with percussion ignition and black powder. Clearly in the heat of combat; getting the chamber to re-close with considerable carbon fouling would have been difficult. This rifle has 160 years of handling marks plus two distinct sets of parallel marks on the buttstock made by two different Yankee soldiers that only gun collectors know the meaning of. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value if the firearm. Additional shipping and handling charges may apply. No sales to New York City, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii.
