Burnside Silver Mining Company, Storey County, Virginia Mining District, Nevada Territory. Cert #1041 issued to J. F. Meinke for 12 shares on May 6, 1864. Signed by Edward L. Lovell (Secretary) and J. D. Mathewson (President). Incorporated in San Francisco on August 28th, 1862, and capitalized at $280,000; 2,800 shares at$100 per. Its claim was located on the western slope of Mount Davidson. In the first week of February 1863, the ìResident Correspondentî of the San Francisco Alta California credited the Burnside company with ìdoing wonders in developing their leadî and reported ìquite an excitement .†.†. created by parties trying to buy up sharesî (Quartz 1863 [bib10342], 1; Quartz 1863 [bib10343], 1). The price of the stock on the San Francisco market fluctuated during the next few months, reaching $69.50 a share in early May, but plunging to $19.00 a month later (ìMining and Other Corporations Formed in 1862,î Sacramento Union, 1 Jan 63, 1; San Francisco Evening Bulletin: ìSan Francisco Mining Companies,î 6 Jan 63, 3; ìSan Francisco Stock and Exchange Board,î FebñJune 63). The following December the Virginia City Evening Bulletin charged that the local editors of the Virginia City Union and Territorial Enterprise ìwere ësold' by the owners of a ësalted' claimóthe Burnsideóless than a year agoî (ìThe Lady Bryan Claim,î 26 Dec 63, 2). The mine was mentioned in an early letter that Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) wrote to his mother and sister in February of 1863 while at the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise paper. Reference: Mark Twain's Letters, 1853-1866. This mine was likely named after General Burnside. Ambrose Everett Burnside (May 23, 1824 - September 13, 1881) who was an American soldier, railroad executive, inventor, industrialist, and politician from Rhode Island, serving as governor and a U.S. Senator. As a Union Army general in the American Civil War, he conducted successful campaigns in North Carolina and East Tennessee, but was defeated in the disastrous Battle of Fredericksburg and Battle of the Crater.
