Butch Cassidy related - An issued/uncancelled stock certificate dated 1918, signed by Western lawman "Joe La Fors" (LeFors) who, as Deputy U.S. Marshal, led a posse to capture Butch Cassidy's gang and most notably gained a confession from Tom Horn. The certificate is for the Sheridan-Wyoming Oil Co. of Wyoming. It has a vignette of a train in an oilfield. Black on white printing with a glitter-gold seal and artwork is issued to "Joe La Fors" and endorsed by him on the reverse side in light green ink. Important Note: the secretary who filled out the stock certificate inadvertently misspelled LeFors' last name as "La Fors" and when he endorsed it, he spelled his last name the same way it was written on the front. The certificate comes with an Oct. 29, 1984, University of Wyoming American Heritage Center, Laramie, Wyoming signature authentication letter. The copies of his signature obtained from the Wyoming Historical Society, where his papers were donated, show an exact match in penmanship and confirmed the signature was his. Also comes with a 5" x 7" copy of a photo of La Fors. Le Fors began his career in law enforcement in 1887, as a Wyoming Livestock Inspector recovering rustled cattle. In 1899, he was appointed a Deputy U.S. Marshal and led a posse to capture Butch Cassidy's gang for train robberies in the territory. He is perhaps most noted for obtaining a confession from Tom Horn who was the primary suspect in the murder of Willie Nickell during the Iron Mountain Montana, range wars of 1902. After the hanging of Horn, LeFors worked as an employee for area cattle companies and did contract cases for the Pinkerton Detective Agency into the early 1900s. He died in Buffalo, Wyoming, in 1940.
