Two important American Express stock stock certificates issued to the Butterfield family, of the Wells, Fargo, Butterfield business family that formed American Express and the Wells Fargo companies. The first certificate is certificate number 3636 issued to John Butterfield for 4 shares on November 18, 1859 signed by Butterfield as VP William G Fargo Sec. Alex Holland as Treas. and not endorsed on the reverse, excellent condition. The second certificate, number 3675 for 6 shares was issued to Daniel Butterfield, son of John Butterfield, and famous Union general. Issued December 30, 1859, the second to last day the company was inexistent in this form, having sold or closed on December 31 and reemerging January 1, 1860 as the new American Express company owned by the very same shareholders this particular certificate is only signed by Henry Wells as president and endorsed on the reverse by Daniel Butterfield.
