Two different stock certificates issued to different members of American Express founder John Butterfield. The first certificate is a type III certificate issued to John Butterfield on April 19, 1860 for three shares, signed by Wells Fargo and Holland, endorsed by Butterfield on the reverse. The second piece is issued to Daniel Butterfield on a type III certificate signed by Wells Fargo and Holland and Daniel Butterfield on the reverse. John Butterfield, one of three founders of the American Express company along with Henry Wells and William G Fargo, are part of the Wells Fargo Butterfield business family that operated for decades. Daniel Butterfield, John Butterfield's son, not only worked for his father in the express business, but became an important union general during the Civil War. This is an important pair of autographs but also includes the Wells and Fargo autographs as well.
