1877 Business Directory of Oakland, Alameda and Berkeley, to which is added Bynon's Diamond History of California. Bynon & Sherman publishers, Arcade Printing, Oakland. Quite possibly the smallest Western Directory, this tiny book is 2" x 2.75" x 3/8". Quebedeaux claims this is the first east Bay directory, and the only one in this tiny format. Each city is separately paginated. It is a very different directory, with tidbits throughout, including the California Constitution at the back of the book. An interesting section, "Chaos" starts out: "It is not the purpose of this little book to perpetuate in history the conflicts, contentions and sufferings that followed this great influx of heterogeneous population, with nothing in common but their thirst for gold" (p52 in the back)
Extremely rare, four copies cited as known, all institutional. Clearly for use by sales agents because of the tiny size. Inscribed inside front cover "H.C. King, cor. 8th and Chester"
