Before working in the Western Theater of the war, he was a lawyer and land speculator, and a noted collector of "Californiana." Copies of his collection are in the Bancroft Library (originals were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake). He was also director of the Almaden Quicksilver Company in San Jose, president of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, and owner of the Rancho Nicasio in Marin County, California.
