Exceptional Photograph. CPRR Mammoth Plate Photo of Engine 229, a 4-8-0 locomotive as Completed at Sacto RR Shops, 1882.

Engine 229 was built specifically for the Bakersfield to Tehachapi route, connecting it with the Southern Pacific into Mojave and Southern California. It was a heavy duty coal burner built for freight. The engine arrived in Bakersfield May 22, 1882, after which it made an initial trip to Tehachapi. The engine was too heavy for the pre-built track route, so repairs and strengthening had to take place on bridges and portions of the track on land. On July 20, 1882, 229 made its first official trip. (credit: John Sweetster, CPRR discussion group)

The State Museum says there are three or four views known, a few like this one while in Sacramento, and the others in Bakersfield. The engine was also notable because it had a new invention, the "stub-pilot" for pushing trains from the rear.
