Very rare, maybe the only one in existence. Unlisted in Cox, this is a certificate from Cable Railway Company, signed by A.S. Hallidie as president and Chas. P. Campbell as secretary. Andrew S. Hallidie (1836-1900) is known as the father of the cable car. In 1873, Hallidie founded the Clay Street Hill Railroad Company in San Francisco, which became the world's first successful cable car company. The idea for the cable car came to Hallidie in 1869, after he witnessed a terrible accident involving a horse-drawn streetcar slipping on the steep hills of San Francisco. He designed a system that used a continuously moving cable to pull streetcars up and down the hills, which was safer and more efficient than the previous system.
This certificate is from a later cable car company dated 1893. Cert. #32. Printed by Britton & Rey, S.F. Joseph Britton and J.J. Rey were also directors of his original Clay Street Cable Company. Uncanceled. Included with this great signature piece is a Cable Car Centennial Token with Hallidie pictured on the front with a cable car on the back. Inscribed, "Andrew Hallidie- Father of the Cable Car".
