14kt gold lapel badge "Lt Col. W. D. Sanborn, ADC / N.G.C." 2" long, 1.5" diameter. "California/ Governor's/ Staff" on the front, blue enamel outlines. 23.9 grams. (roughly 15g Au, 1/2oz)
William Sanborn was a 47 year employee of the Burlington railroad, and for over 35 years was Burlington's agent in San Francisco. Markham, California Congressman (1885-1887) and later the state's 18th Governor appointed Sanborn a Colonel on his staff, a position he held through the next three administrations (1891-on). Sanborn was married to the daughter of a Donner tragedy survivor (Murphy family). His ties to the State were thus deep and important, as well as his business savvy in regards to inter-state transportation of goods and services.
The badge is exceptionally eye appealing
