This piece is exceptionally important and notable because of the scratch through the plating, indicating someone was checking the coin for gold content. Was it during the 1850s or 1860s when someone tried to pass it as a gold coin? Was it by a collector at a later date> We wont know, but similar scratches are seen on some California private mint gold coins from the gold rush period.
