California Assay Office, 512 California Street, San Francisco, October 24, 1872. J.A. Mars, Assayer. Addressed to H.C. Egerton who was supt. of the Manhattan Silver Mining Company in Austin, Nevada. Mars writes that the samples left by Egerton are magnetic iron ore and then lists the various components (silica, manganese, alumina, protoxide and sesquioxide of iron, etc. Signed by Mars. A Nevada iron ore assay is highly unusual! Folds. 10.5" x 8" This assay office was first opened up by G.W. Bell in 1859 who was killed in a nitroglycerin explosion in 1866.
