Inc. No. 28, 1884. Stock number 11, issued for nearly all of the company, 9,975 shares, to William T. Coleman on Dec. 1st, 1884. Signed by the president and secretary W.R. Townsend. Not cancelled. This company was one of the borax companies owned by William T. Coleman & Co. Coleman formed the company to process and package the borax mined in Death Valley. It was later taken over by FM "Borax" Smith. This stock represents Coleman taking control of it for his borax empire. William T. Coleman was a California pioneer who came to San Francisco during the Gold Rush, serving on the Vigilance Committee in 1851 and 1856. He ran a steamship business during the 1860s, and then took over the Death Valley borax industry in the 1880s. [Ref:Daily Alta California,May 10th, 1888] () Ken Prag Collection
