Lot of three letterheads that reveal prejudice toward African Americans & women in the workplace. 1) Unused pictorial 19th century letterhead for the American Exchange Hotel in San Francisco that boasts "Best White Help Only Employed." 2) Pictorial letterhead for Murray & Ready, The Leading Male Employment & Labor Agents on the Pacific Coast, San Francisco. Message is dated March 3, 1906 (month before SF earthquake) and is addressed to Emily Preston in Preston, CA: "We received a letter...asking if we could supply you with a woman for housework...we cannot fill your order...we do not supply Female help, only White Male help and Men and wives." 3) 1911 letter from the Southern California Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage, Los Angeles. To the Editor of the Beacon in Mendocino: "Since the arguments of the suffragists have been given freely to the public...may we ask you...to state our side of the case."
