Two page letter, dateline Washington, from a lawyer asking the recipient to be prepared to pay John what is due him. There is mention of a $5,000 Ward & Company bill for one thing. It starts "Before this reaches you, I trust that you have arrived in San F. and it is my most sincere hope also that you will have already got your bearings in good train for a satisfactory result." "All of his [John's] hopes hang upon you...." It is a letter of great hope and deep dread: "...your fortune from the danger which threatens it..." Who is John and what was his "great California fortune"? An interesting Gold Rush mystery. Folds, soiling. 9.75 x 7.5" Washington is located in Nevada County, California. Founded in 1849 by miners from Indiana, it was originally named Indiana Camp. It was renamed Washington in 1850.
