Early Gold Rush dispatches! Two different issues of the The Republic, printed in Washington D.C., January 8, 1851 and August 30, 1849. The 1849 issue has an article on the third page describing a voyage from Panama to San Francisco. Rents were astronomical. "The stories relative to the quantities of gold in this country are very little exaggerated...we have bought and sold largely of it, weighing and pouring it into and out of the scales as a country storekeeper would sugar or coffee..." The 1851 issue has a front page column about Gold Mining on the Yuba, with a dispatch from Rose's Bar; "This river has been the ruin of many hundreds of miners..." "Over seventy dams have been thrown across the river, and not more than four of five have turned out well..." Mentions two companies, the Excelsior and Patch. Describes the rich gold being found on the Park's and Sugar's bars, etc. Both newspapers have expected folds and some tears, but are in remarkable condition for their age.
