This is an unlisted variety. Receipt for Poll Tax, 1876, with $2 Poll Tax facsimile adhesive stamp in upper right corner. Black on pink. Issued May 1876 to Dr. Chas. Ellingwood of the US Marine Hospital. Signed by Deputy Assessor M. McCarthy. Lith. Britton, Rey & Co., SF. 3.25 x 7.5" Mahler calls these receipts "exceedingly rare." He argues that these were only indirectly related to voting and more used as a "head tax" on adult males. He has seen only 32 examples of these receipts.
