A great collection of publications centering around railroading in the redwoods, as well as the Santa Clara Valley.; Included is one of my own personal favorites "Prune Country Railroading" by Norman Holmes. A fascinating history of the development of Santa Clara County and its prune and grape industry and the standard and narrow gauge railroads that served it: the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad, the Santa Clara & Pajaro Valley Railroad, the Western Pacific, the South Pacific Coast Railroad, the Southern Pacific, and the WP's Feather River Route. Also covered are industrial, military, and amusement railroads. With locomotive rosters. Illustrated with over 400 rare black and white photographs. Includes maps and bibliography. End papers show vintage map of the San Francisco and Santa Fe Railroad. 191 pages. I LOVE this book! Next, "The Story of the California Western Skunk Railroad" by Spencer Crump. A history of the Fort Bragg to Willits railroad. Next, "Pine Across the Mountain" by Robert Hanft. A history of the McCloud River Railroad, a logging railroad at the base of Mt. Shasta incorporating much of the history of the lumbering industry in Siskiyou County, CA. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. Includes roster. With timetables, gradient profiles, maps and bibliography. Beautifully done system map on endpapers. 224 pages with index. ; "Narrow Gauge to the Redwoods" by Bray Dickinson. The story of the North Pacific Coast Rwy, later part of the Northwestern Pacific Rwy. Narrow gauge it may have been but the well-maintained railroad carried redwood and tourists, sightseers and commuters from San Francisco Bay to the Russian River. The speedy paddle-wheel ferries filled in any gaps. Includes rosters, equipment plans, maps, and b/w pictures on almost every page of the men who built the railroad and the equipment that carried the cargo. These and more about railroading in California. Dust jackets have slight wear but are intact. Please see photos for more detail and condition.
