Lot of 7. Includes pieces related to mining in Nevada Territory! The California State Telegraph Company was organized to provide telegraph service between San Francisco and Marysville, California, but by the spring of 1861, the company had expanded its service area south to Los Angeles, north to Yreka, and east to Fort Churchill by absorbing other telegraph companies in California. In 1861, the company formed the Overland Telegraph Company, which was responsible for constructing part of the telegraph line which resulted in the first transcontinental telegraph network in the United States. Absorbed into the Western Union Telegraph Company in 1867. 1) January 1864 (territorial) telegram dateline Carson (Nevada), sent by Henry G. Blasdel to Gen. PE Conner about appointment. Later that year, Blasdel would be appointed the first governor of Nevada! 2) Billhead, SF, 1865, with revenue stamp. 3) Telegram sent May 1st, 1864 (territorial) from Sacramento to HH Day, supt. of the Savage Mine in Virginia City, NV. Signed by Robert Morrow. 4) Cover and telegram sent Huly 1864 (territorial) from William Lent to HH Day, supt. of Savage Mine. Message: "How look the shafts and drifts today"! Lent was a major financier of Comstock and Bodie mines. 5) Telegram sent from Placerville, January 1863. Message to HS Rumfield from Tracy about mails delayed in Salt Lake City by train. 6) Telegram sent from Downieville, May 1864. Used as a receipt for charges.
