Suits-Shuman Co.'s California State Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1904-5. Here is a directory Ron didn't know he had. The 1905 Suits-Schuman is one of the most important western directories for California research, in that it is from a period of post-1900 gold-silver boom, containing many of the small mining camps. He and I used it regularly. Then we found this earlier volume from 1904, a discovery! As with the 1905 version, the binding is poor. 6 x 9" format, 906pp. This copy was originally owned by Charles S. Conner, an attorney in Los Angeles, as well as Cochran, Williams & Phillips. The directory has an inventory upfront of the towns listed, easily over 1000 California towns. Unlike the 1905 version, there are no Nevada locales included. This is easily the most important of the first post-1900 State Gazetteers. The business directory portion comprises 147pp alone! The retail liquor section is by surname of owners, not saloon name.
