Lot of six examples of the 1925-S commemorative half dollar. Three are BU, two are AU and one EF. Designed by Jo Mora, the coin has been widely praised for its beauty, although opposition to the design came from the Commission of Fine Arts. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the coin celebrated the 75th anniversary of California statehood. Only 150,000 of the authorized mintage of 200,000 were ever struck and nearly half went unsold and were melted. According to Q. David Bowers 63,606 pieces were returned to the Mint for melting, leaving a total of 86,593 pieces distributed to the public.
