Lot of 3 stock certificates from counties across California: 1) Valparaiso Mining Company, incorporated 31 December 1872. Certificate No. 239, issued on 5 December 1873 to T. J. Phelps for 10 shares, $10 per. Signed by Wm. H. Watson, secretary, and C. Jones, president. U/C. Vignette: a small drawing of an American Indian, with headdress, holding a peace pipe. Measures 4" x 9.5". Very good condition. The Valparaiso Mine was located 4.5 mils south of Jackson Mining District, between Sutter Creek and Mokelumne River in Amador County, which was the most important gold producing county of the California Mother Lode. The Valparaiso produced native gold in rich "pockets" in white quartz fissures in the Mariposa slate formation. The concentrates from which were said to have produced as much as 37 ounces of gold per ton. 2) Empire Mill and Mining Company, incorporated 23 April 1877. Certificate No. 61, issued on 4 July 1878 to C. D. Morrison, Trustee for 2500 shares, $10 per. Signed by Wm. R. Drake, secretary, and Alfred Lyon, president. U/C. Small vignette of an eagle, upper right. Measures 4" x 9", trimmed close to border in upper right. Printer: A. L. Bancroft & Co. S. F. Very Fine. One of the mines this company owned was the Empire mine in Amador County, located 2 miles west of Mokelumne Hill and 2.5 miles south of Jackson in the central Mother Lode region. The Pacific company took over the Empire`s assets after 1883 [Ref: Logan, Mother Lode Gold Belt, 1934, p 106-7]. 3) The Golden Gate Mining Co., incorporated under the laws of the state of Arizona in 1902. Certificate No. 2623, issued on 20 March 1903 to Mrs. Augusta Fahn for 500 shares, $1 per. Signed by R. M. Fry, secretary, and J. M. Peters, vice president. U/C. Seven vignettes of miners and mining scenes along the border of the certificate, and in the upper left corner. Bears a seal in the lower left. Measures 11" x 8.5". Printer: Louis C.
