This is an interesting piece that came from an old collection in the California Mother Lode region. It is currently retained in its original "protective" plastic holder, now heavily yellowed. We have no other provenance.
This is the key issue of all California newspapers, as it contains the first announcement of California gold in a California printed newspaper.
It becomes exceptionally difficult to determine the originality of this copy. It is reported, without discussion, that there are three different versions of reprints, all of unknown age.
The original was printed on thin cigarette paper.
A version of this paper, assumably an original, is available on newspapers.com. That copy does not have a small printed "x" in front of the short article on gold discovered, as does this copy. It therefore MUST be assumed this is a copy, albeit an early copy, since this paper is also printed on thin paper. The quality of print is nearly exact to the original - complete with small, thin printed margin lines being perfectly duplicated, a difficult task.
The new owner will undoubtedly carefully remove the paper from this very old and crude plastic protective covering and place it into a more proper mylar holder.
