Camelia Mining Company – Datelined Virginia City, U.T. (Utah Territory) Stock Certificate No. 27 for 5 shares made out to Edward Chevassus dated April 15, 1861. The mine is located in the Virginia Mining District, Carson County, U.T. (Utah Territory). This Mining Company was formed prior to the formation of the separate Nevada Territory on March 2, 1861, which existed until October 31, 1864 as the Nevada Territory when it became the 36th state. Prior to its designation as Nevada Territory, the area was part of western Utah Territory and known as “Washoe”. On March 2, 1861, the "act to organize the Territory of Nevada" was approved by President Buchanan, just two days before he retired from office to be succeeded by President Lincoln. It was left to Lincoln to appoint the officers to proceed with effecting the organization of the new territory. Utah Territory was originally formed as part of the Compromise of 1850 that sought to preserve the balance of power between slave and free states. The Certificate identifies 480 shares at 5 feet each were capitalized. No dollar amount is recorded. Signatures include J. H. Weilshom Secretary and J. Susten, President. Edward Chevassus is listed in Langley's San Francisco Directory for 1861, p.96. Black on white. Not in Becker or Kelly. Very good + condition. This is one of the earliest mining stock certificates of the Comstock and rare with the Utah Territory designation and the ownership in “feet” notation. Virginia City Nevada Franklin Collection
