Stampless cover. Letter is dated 1840. It is sent to Ohio, some 400 miles, with a manuscript 25c. Letter is three pages long. It is a detailed letter on what is happing at Cantonment Gibson. Find names of people, long walks to visit others , "Major Wharton is still here with his Dragons." Has rips and tears, but quite readable. Cantonment Gibson (renamed Fort Gibson in 1832) was established to control the hostilities between the Cherokee and Osages. Letter is addressed from Arkansas, but will soon become part of the Indian Territory and Oklahoma. Nice cover and nice history!
