In 1863, a group of Cape May County investors was granted a charter by the state of New Jersey to build the Cape May & Millville Railroad (CM&M). The first trains ran on August 23, 1863. Construction was completed in 1867, with the full line extending 41 miles. It was leased to the West Jersey Railroad in 1869; and fully merged into the West Jersey on August 27, 1879.
