Captain Stewart Van Vilet in the capacity of Assistant Quarter Master receives goods at Fort Riley, Ks. This receipt for goods for provisioning the U.S. Army is dated September 1860. It is noted that the first items of importance on this grocery list are: "15 Sacks of Coffee, and 4 half barrels of whiskey", etc. This document has some water staining. It is no secret that the importance of whiskey for the Army, as well as rum in the Navy are considered staples for survival. The second item is a check made out to the Union Clerk and endorsed by Stewart Van Vilet Brt. Maj. Clerk dated 1877. A small photo for Van Vilet is included. Please see photos for details.
