Four empty carbide shipping barrels, three complete with lids, approximately two feet tall and one foot in diameter. The two blue barrels are labeled Union Carbide and the red one is labeled National Carbide. The fourth is an orange Superior Calcium Carbide with "Miners Lamp" on the reverse. Before the advent of battery-powered electrical mine lamps, underground miners wore a small lamp on their helmet that burned acetylene gas generated by dripping water onto calcium carbide (CaC2). The burning gas produced a bright white flame. Mines purchased carbide in bulk in metal barrels like those in this lot. Obviously, the carbide had to be kept dry before it was used in the miner's lamp. Spelunkers and underground explorers often still use carbide lamps today.
