Letter dated July 21, 1869, datelined Carlin, Nevada from Thos. H. Smith to Mr. John Wilson, Portland Agn. "Herewith enclosed I send you a promissory note executed by Andrew and Mathew Fife on the 15th day of August, 1868 for $2,500 in ley with 3% a month interest due Aug. 15, 1869, and two certificates for 250 shares in the Owyhee Road & Bridge Co. given me as collateral security for the note. Last season when we went to work on the road I made an arrangement with Mr. Sands to loan Mr. Fife and his brother the $2500 to help pay their half of the cost of completing the road. Mr. Sands loaned him $625...but won't advance him no more for the reason that Mr. Fife did not comply with certain promises he had made him. In the meantime I had hired men and incurred considerable expense on the road which I am personally liable for. So to get out of that dilemma I settled with Sands for the money he had advanced." Smith requested that Wilson sign and return to me the enclosed receipt and send the note and certificate of stock for collection to A. Davenport, Esq. atty at Law, Treasure City, Nevada. In the end, Smith had loaned the Fife's $4500, the $2500 note and an additional $2000 and didn't think he would be repaid. His plan was to try to collect the note first, so he could pay back Wilson and some friends. Smith talks about suing Fife if he can't collect. "If the road was valuable, Mr Fife would no doubt pay my demands and redeem his stock but owing to that part of the country being almost deserted that in common with most other property has little or no value at present." Three page letter is in good shape. On the back is a short note from Portland, Oregon dated July 30, 1869 from Wilson stating that he had answered Smith's letter and complied with his demands and forwarded the certificates to Wm A. Davenport for collection. This letter is dated 1869, one year after the establishment of the post office at Carlin, Nevada. City: Carlin State: Nevada Date: HWAC# 51261
