Letter about the building of the Owyhee Road & Bridge Company in 1868. Dated July 21, 1869 and datelined Carlin, Nevada. From Thomas. H. Smith to Mr. John Wilson of Portland. "Herewith enclosed I send you a promissory note executed by Andrew and Matthew Fife on the 15th day of August, 1868 for $2,500 with 3% a month interest due Aug. 15, 1869, and two certificates for 250 shares in the Owyhee Road & Bridge Co. given me as collateral security for the note." Andrew Fife won the contract for the road and he hired Smith to build it. Smith claims that the Fife's owe him $4,500 and asks Wilson to forward all documents to William Davenport of Treasure Hill. He is the acting Judge for White Pine and Elko counties. Smith wants to money to pay debts to people in Nevada, Oregon and Idaho. He does understand Fife's problem, however, "If the road was valuable, Mr Fife would no doubt pay my demands and redeem his stock but owing to that part of the country being almost deserted that in common with most other property has little or no value at present." Smith built (or upgraded) the road from Paradise Valley to Three Forks. It was known as the Military Road in 1868 as it was the main route the military used to address the Indian problems in Paradise Valley in 1865 and 1867. Short biographies of Fife and Davenport. History of the road. Three page letter is in good shape. State: Nevada City: Carlin, Elko Date: HWAC# 99765
