Albert E. Flatt, 18, roundhouseman, saved Curtis W. Ayers, 9; Walter E. Todd, 10, and Arnold W. Wood, 10, and attempted to save Nathan B. Ayers, 11, from drowning, Port Morris, New Jersey, December 6, 1905. Flatt broke through the ice on Lake Musconetcong while going toward the boys, who were in the water. He broke the intervening ice with his fists and succeeded, after being in the water 15 minutes, in getting all but one upon the ice. For this heroic act, he was awarded the Carnegie Medal and $1000, which he used to buy his mother a house. The 75 mm medal comes in the presentation case and includes the unfortunate newspaper clipping reporting Flatt's death a few years later when he was run over by his own train.
