An outstanding view from the roof of the new Nevada capital building. Mount 7 x 10", photo 4.5 x 7.5". In pen below photo "Carson City, 1868". stain to mount at bottom not affecting the photo. On reverse, sold at one time by Stafford's Mark Twain Book Shop, Carson City, Nevada.

This incredible view is reportedly one of four shots taken from the roof of the new capital building, one in each direction. The State has all four in their collection, though no photographer is noted. From Mautz and our own records, there were at least two photographers in Carson in 1870: F. G. Ludlow who ran the Pioneer Gallery, and P. Swander who had an office opposite the Mint.

The photo dated to about 1870. The new Mint is clearly visible at the center, and is one of the last two buildings on the north end of Carson, another identifying mark that the photo is 1870, as a number of buildings went up right after Mint completion.

The focus is so good, this photo can be blown up significantly, and all signs are visible.

The livery stable at front left was owned by Sheriff T.G. Smith, who soon sold to J.M. Benton. Dead center at left is a two story building with two windows on the second floor with a six post balcony. This was the boarding house where Sam Clemens stayed, along with his mining partner Howland (see Howland signed document in this auction).
