Rare letterhead issued in the 1880s for 10 deposits at the mint from the Mexican Mill (Comstock mines) for Clayton Belknap. 8 x 10" official Mint letterhead. The Mexican Mill was located along the Carson River about 0.5 mile west of Empire City. It was built in 1861. In 1863, it had the largest waterwheel on the West Coast. [Ref:Ansari]. The Carson City Mint opened in 1870. It operated 1870 until 1885, then resumed again from 1889-1893. The building later served as the US Assay Office. Coins with the "CC" mark are highly sought-after. The mint used silver from the nearby Comstock Lode mining district. Clayton Belknap's name appears on many Virginia City and Carson documents in the 1870s and 80s as he was a notary public and also served as secretary for some mining companies. His brother was a Nevada Supreme Court justice. Carson City Nevada
