Spectacular! This is an original cancelled CC mint coin die authenticated by Carson City Mint Press Operator Ken Hopple. After examining it, Ken believes this to be an 1877 die. A cache of these coin dies were found in 1999 during excavations for a small park and plaza between the Nevada State Museum (the old Mint building) and an old bank building north of Caroline Street. (The dies were cancelled and buried near a shed on the mint grounds). At the time, Doug Sutherland reported that some of these dies (like ours) were sold at auction, while others were sent back to the Treasury. This die was shipped from the Philadelphia Mint to be used at Carson City. It is stamped on the side "CC". Approx. 34mm diameter, which is right for a $20 double eagle. About 1 7/8 inch long. The face of the die is engraved with the 13 stars and bust of Liberty used on double eagle dies for U.S. coinage in the later half of the 19th century. No date is visible, though close-up photos (and microscope time) seem to show a "1" and "8" and possibly a "7". Comes with 4 strikes done by Hopple. In 1877, the Carson City Mint produced 42,565 $20 gold pieces. How many were struck with this die?
