Agency of The Bank of California. Virginia, Nev., Febry. 10th, 1890. The Southern Development Company of Nevada is being paid $1,456. Signed by Henry Yerington as president of the CCRR and E.B. Yerington (his son) as assistant secretary. Blue color check with CCRR logo. Cut cancel and very small stain. The Southern Development Company of Nevada was incorporated in 1881 with familiar Nevada players Yerington, Bliss, Bender, Tobey and Tickner. The company formed to buy and sell land, build and operate toll roads, locate and hold water rights to construct waterways and systems, and to acquire lands for timbering in Nevada and California. They bought and ran the Walker Lake and Bodie Toll Road and the Walker Lake Wood and Lumber Co., and spent the last decade of the 19th century timbering, developing the town of Hawthorne (the terminus of the CCRR), and managing mining claims on their property. With the decline of timbering, the company sold its properties in Hawthorne and dissolved in 1920. [Ref:https://knowledgecenter.unr.edu/specoll/mss/NC74.aspx] (Prag Collection)
