A heart-shaped Carson and Colorado Railroad lock and key, c1881-1900. "C & C RR Z" and "Thorne S" engraved on the shackle. XRARE. Probably the only one known. Thorne Station, located on the east side of Walker Lake in Esmeralda County, was utilized by the narrow gauge Carson/Colorado Railroad, starting in 1881 during the Nevada mining boom. The Carson & Colorado was incorporated in 1880 with financing backed by W.E. Sharon, one-time senator and D.O. Mills, mining magnate. "The line ultimately extended from Keeler, California to Mound House, Nevada." (Nevada State Journal, Dec. 16, 1945 - Newspapers.com) The line was taken over by the standard gauge Southern Pacific in 1900. The Thorne Depot was demolished in 1983, with some of its parts going to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, Nev. The town of Thorne, Nevada, no longer exists. The lock measures about 3" x 2.5" x 1". Excellent condition.
