This cover (purchased from Schuyler Rumsey) was mailed in 1857 or 1858 and either carried by Snowshoe Thompson or was one of the first pieces of mail on Chorpenning's new transcontinental route that had been opened the month this was mailed). It is addressed to General James Denver, Commissioner of Indian Affairs and for whom Denver, Colorado was named. Extensive background on the probable dates of this cover is included! Also biographies of Denver and Thompson.
NEW INFORMATION!!
A collector has given us new information on this cover. We always try to be honest with our collectors, and feel the need to address his concern. He points out that Denver did not become a general until 1861 totally making any claim of a Snowshoe Thompson relationship null and void. It is still an early Carson Valley, Utah Territory Nevada piece! More research needs to be done.
