This Riker box of six cartridges may be some of the rarest ammunition found. All were found at the Dull Knife Fight in Wyoming where the 4th Cavalry encountered a band of Cheyenne in November, 1876. Just five months after the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Five cartridges are .45-70 Benet primed ammunition without any head stampings; manufacturer between 1868-1882. One cartridge is .50-70 Govt. also Benet primed. These cartridges were made at the Frankford Arsenal in Pennsylvania. The Benet priming system is unique because it looks like a rimfire cartridge however, it is meant to be struck by a firing pin in the center of the cartridge. These rounds are the predecessors to the externally primed center fire cartridges known today as a "centerfire cartridge". There is also a .50 cal. bullet roughly 550 grains with heavy grease grooves and a dimple in the base, not of current production. The rifles used can also be identified by this ammunition.
