George Russell and John Rueben Bradley were very successful cattlemen in Northeast Nevada. So what were they doing in Reno? Alfalfa! Bradley came to Nevada in 1862 with his father, Lewis “Old Broadhorns,” (future Governor of Nevada). The family moved to and created a large ranching operation in Lander County. In 1869 they moved to Elko County. Russell settled in Nevada in 1863. At first he settled at Mineral Hill in the freighting business. Some years later he moved to Elko where he opened a general merchandise store. (Russell was candidate for governor in 1898.) Sometime in the early 1870’s Russell and Bradley joined forces to create one of the largest cattle ranches in the state. They would be able to claim well over 25,000 head when they sold their operations in the 1890’s. This seven page deed goes into quite a bit of detail where the land they purchased; Nevada State Prison Grounds, Upper Orr Ranch, Auburn Mill, Vulcan Powder Company, Lee's Cattle Coral, and lots of water rights! The Deed is seven pages long. Includes 4 pages of historical background. City: Reno, Washoe State: Nevada Date: HWAC# 99482
