The first sword is marked "N.P. Ames/ Cabotville (Mass.)/ 1848" in a heavy font left side. The right side is marked "US / RC" at the ricasso. RC- is Rufus Chandler US Ordinance Inspector. The brass hand guard is also stamped in a light font "RC and JWR"- for Rufus Chandler and J.W. Ripley. The second sword is marked "made by/Ames MfgCo/Chicopee (Mass.)" left side. The right is marked "US/J.H' XX62"(1862). J.H- is John Hannis US Ordinance Inspector. Each sword has a brass guard, wire wrapped grip, brass loop and pommel. The brass fittings appear to be original with ordinance inspector markings and red brass coloration consistent with early US brass casting. No scabbards present. With a wood cross pattern display. 38.5 in. overall length. Very good condition.
