Dubbed the "Celebrity Wash Basin" because it was photographed so frequently by Nemo the underwater ROV. It sat right next to the Gold Room, so it appears in many images. Be sure to look at the 3-D image of this wash basin next to a box of gold coins, in the 3D Technologies section. This broken but distinctively shaped wash basin is also clearly visible in the debris field on page 102 of the Holabird December, 2002 SS Central America catalog. Originally 12 sided, 5 full and 2 partial sides remain. Hallmark on the base shows the British royal seal with // IRONSTONE CHINA / J.F. // beneath it. This refers to J. Fernyhough, who was a china/ironstone manufacturer in Staffordshire, in partnership with J. Adams and S. Hartshorne, until October 1853. (10/4/1853 Liverpool Mercury, and 10/7/1853 Coventry Standard). This piece may have been purchased as part of the initial outfitting of the ship for its maiden voyage in October 1853 as the S.S. George Law, the original name for the S.S. Central America. Lip is 12.75" across the top, base 6.75". 1" lip chip, mostly underneath the lip. 1.25" hairline crack inside of basin on a broken side. Rust stains the broken edges of this piece, evidence that the damage occurred long ago, during the shipwreck.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
