United States 1776-1876 Centennial stock certificate No. 1015, issued for 1 share to Joseph Richetts dated May 15, 1875 of capital stock of the Centennial Board of Finance. Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving and Printing; Geo. W. Casilear, Supt. of Engineering; Geo. B. McCartee, Chief of Bureau. signed by Jno. Welsh as President and Fred Fraley as Treasurer. Farming, Continental Congress, and Native American overlooking city vignettes at bottom, with multi-ethnic vignettes on sides and on top. Foxing and tears noted primarily along border, measures 22 x 18". Part of the Prag collection.

The US Centennial Commission was organized on March 3, 1872, with Joseph R. Hawley of Connecticut as president. The Centennial Commission's commissioners included one representative from each state and territory in the United States. On June 1, 1872, Congress created a Centennial Board of Finance to help raise money. The board's president was John Welsh, brother of philanthropist William Welsh, who had raised funds for The Great Sanitary Fair in 1864.
