Very rare proof stock certificate. (See the even earlier stage proof also in this sale). Black border and print and a locomotive vignette. Printed by ABN. Red pencil at bottom right dates this to Dec. 24th, 1880. Also notations on bottom that say "Correct CH Hobbs." 7.75 x 15.75" with stub. Folds, creases, punch holes. According to a March 1880 article in Press and Daily Dakotaian, the company was formed to run from Bald Mountain to Ft. Mead via Deadwood and Whitewood Gulch. An article in Dec. 1880 (The Evening Spy) says work has commenced and will be completed by August 1st, 1881. They also says the road will have a 1,500 foot tunnel. In March 1881, The Vancouver Independent reports that the line will start at Lead City and run to Deadwood, Central City, and Crook City, and then to the foothills where it will join with Chicago & Northwestern. Archibald McArthur of Chicago is the contractor.
